The History of the West Highland Hotel
The West Highland Hotel has a varied and interesting history. It was first built in the early part of the twentieth century to coincide with the coming of the railway and was originally named the Station Hotel. The famous West Highland Line runs from Fort William all the way to Mallaig, and if possible you should take this train journey some time during your stay, as it is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world. In the summer a steam train runs along this line from Fort William to Mallaig six times a week - an added bonus for steam railway enthusiasts!
On 8th of February 1927 a huge fire destroyed the hotel and it
had to be totally rebuilt. A quote from the local police
officer on duty at the time stated: "Station Hotel here totally
destroyed by fire at 10.40pm last night, loss estimated at between
40 and 50 thousand, no person injured"
After the fire the hotel was extensively renovated and renamed The West Highland Hotel. Since then it has been lovingly cared for by its owners past and present and fortunately there have been no more fires!
The most prestigious event in the hotel's most recent history was
the 1999 visit of the Princess Royal, Princess Anne. She was in Mallaig
to open the newly completed harbour extension, and during her visit
came to the hotel for afternoon tea.
